Swissport

Swissport International has opened its second air cargo warehouse at Vienna International Airport. The new cargo facility will have a surface of 2,100 square meters, bringing Swissport’s total cargo space to 7,000 square meters at Vienna International.

The new air cargo facility, which is operated by Swissport, the global leader in airport ground handling and air cargo services, has direct airside access, allowing shipments to be transported to and from the aircraft much faster than before. Swissport is one of only two air cargo handlers at Vienna International Airport which can provide a direct access to the airport apron.

“We are pleased to be able to offer our clients even shorter transit times for their shipments going through Vienna”, says Willy Ruf, Senior Vice President Central Europe of Swissport. “The opening of the new warehouse is another step to meet our strategic goal of offering direct airside access at each of the 15 airports at which we offer cargo services in Germany, Austria and Switzerland”.

The new facility was built by the Flughafen Wien AG, the Vienna airport operator. Swissport entered into a long-term lease agreement for the facility. As part of this arrangement, Swissport has relocated its cargo documentation services to new offices in the building, offering clients a one-stop service.

Swissport says the opening of its second warehouse in Vienna is in line with their global cargo strategy, which focuses on higher-yielding, profitable growth. Just recently, Swissport has been appointed by Finnair Cargo as the new operator of its COOL Nordic Cargo Hub facility at Helsinki Airport. And at London’s Heathrow airport, Swissport is now fully responsible for managing the Heathrow Cargo Handling Ltd., after it has increased its shares of the former joint venture with Air France to 100 per cent. Increasingly, Swissport is also focusing on special cargo like pharmaceuticals and has been adding more IATA CEIV-certified air freight facilities to its worldwide cargo handling network.

Sweden-based freight forwarder Scandinavian Logistics Partners (Scanlog) will cease selling traditional airfreight and is now launching Always Carbon Offset Airfreight programme as it becomes the latest transport firm to make an environmental pledge.

The company will from now on offset for the CO2e* emissions caused by the airfreight, including pre- and on-carriage, that is handled for its customers, by investing in projects certified according to the international standards Gold Standard and Climate & Community Biodiversity Standard.

Scanlog’s CEO Mattias Ljungberg said: “For many years we have been working on the concept of Responsible Logistics with a big focus on reducing the environmental impact of transportation. Together with our customers we optimize routing, capacity utilisation and not at least transport modes.

“Thanks to this we have become a major rail freight operator. But we are also one of the major air freight forwarders in Sweden and now we want to take a step towards reducing the climate impact of aviation.

We are the first logistics company in Sweden, and probably in the world, who now always carbon offsets all air freight we handle without cost to our customers.”

Aviation accounts for about 2–3% of global greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) and the transport sector as a whole account for about 15 %.

The aviation sector’s CO2e emissions are small in relation to other sectors’ emissions, but CO2e emissions per transported unit are considerably larger than for other modes of transport.

FedEx is suing the US government to obtain an exclusion to the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) if it mistakenly ships goods that violate rules imposed on Chinese products by the Trump administration.

The lawsuit, filed in the District of Columbia by the US parcels giant against the US Department of Commerce, said that the EAR place an “unreasonable burden” on FedEx to “police the millions of shipments that transit our network every day”.

The logistics giant added that FedEx is “a transportation company, not a law enforcement agency”.

The legal move comes after a phone, produced by Huawei of China, was sent to the US and then returned to its sender in Britain, in what FedEx said was an “operational error.”

FedEx’s suit and delivery error come against a backdrop of increasing tension between the world’s two biggest economies. The United States and China have been engaged in a trade fight for nearly a year on issues such as tariffs, subsidies, technology, regulations and cyber security.

FedEx said today in a statement that it believes the EAR “violate common carriers’ rights to due process under the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution as they unreasonably hold common carriers strictly liable for shipments that may violate the EAR without requiring evidence that the carriers had knowledge of any violations”.

The statement continued: “This puts an impossible burden on a common carrier such as FedEx to know the origin and technological make-up of the contents of all the shipments it handles and whether they comply with the EAR.

“As a company that is committed to complying with all laws and regulations in the countries we serve, FedEx strongly supports the objectives of US export control laws.”

It continued: “We have invested heavily in our internal export control compliance program. However, we believe that the EAR, as currently constructed and implemented, place an unreasonable burden on FedEx to police the millions of shipments that transit our network every day. FedEx is a transportation company, not a law enforcement agency.

FedEx will continue to defend our rights as a US based global company, and we remain committed to delivering outstanding service to our customers in all countries around the world.”

At the time of the Huawei phone incident, the parcels company stated: “FedEx values our business in China. Our relationship with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and our relationships with all of our customers in China are important to us. FedEx holds itself to a very high standard of service. FedEx will fully cooperate with any regulatory investigation into how we serve our customers.”

Conflict between FedEx and Huawei

Last month, China said it would launch an investigation after two parcels sent via FedEx destined for Huawei addresses in Asia were diverted to the United States. FedEx said the packages were “misrouted in error.”

In the latest incident, technology news outlet PCMag here said that its writer in Britain had attempted to send a Huawei P30 handset to a colleague in the United States. FedEx returned the phone and told the sender that it could not deliver the package because of a “U.S. government issue” with Huawei and the Chinese government, PCMag reported.

FedEx responded by saying publicly that it would deliver all products made by Huawei to addresses other than those of Huawei and affiliates placed on the U.S. national security blacklist.

FedEx rival United Parcel Service Inc also confirmed it would not ship to Huawei addresses on the Entity List but had no “general ban” on Huawei products.

A Huawei spokesman said the Chinese firm was not currently using either FedEx or UPS services. On Sunday, Huawei tweeted it was not within FedEx’s right to prevent the delivery and said the courier had a “vendetta.”

“Black list”

Chinese telecoms company Huawei Technologies Co in May was added to the U.S. “Entity List” of people and companies the government said posed a risk to the United States, essentially barring it from buying U.S. technology upon which it was heavily reliant.

China is also drawing up its own “Unreliable Entities List” of foreign firms, groups and individuals. State-run newspaper Global Times on Sunday tweeted that FedEx was likely to be added to that list.

State news agency Xinhua previously said the investigation into FedEx misrouting Huawei packages should not be regarded as retaliation.

China’s foreign ministry asked for a full explanation.

In May, European-based carriers Air-France-KLM, International Airlines Group and Lufthansa Cargo Group reported year-over-year increases in their monthly traffic results. Carrier traffic performance this month shows a slight recovery from the declines these carriers reported in earlier months.

Air France-KLM’s May traffic rose 4.3% y-o-y across the group to 731 million FTKs¹. Both Air France and KLM contributed to this growth with increases in May traffic of 7.9% and 1.7%, respectively. Across the group, carriers reported a year-to-date traffic increase of 1.8%, to almost 3.5 billion FTKs.

International Airlines Group reported a slight 0.4% y-o-y increase in May cargo traffic, to 477 million RTKs². Regarding the Group’s subsidiary carriers, traffic declined on British Airways by 1.3% in May while Iberia and Aer Lingus traffic increased by 6.7% and 7.7%, respectively, for the month. For the first five months of 2019, traffic is up 1.2% to 2.3 billion RTKs.

Lufthansa Cargo Group airlines reported May traffic increased 2.5% y-o-y to 930 million FTKs. From a regional perspective, traffic in the Asia-Pacific declined by 3.2% y-o-y. Meanwhile, traffic was up slightly in Europe, the Americas and the Middle East/Africa regions. Year-to-date, traffic is down 2.1% y-o-y to approximately 4.3 billion FTKs across Lufthansa Group Airlines.

Air France-KLM launched its ebooking and dynamic pricing in May, which may have contributed to the carrier’s increase in volumes this month. Meanwhile, after reporting weak Q1 results, in an April statement Lufthansa Group said it anticipated a recovery in its unit revenues for Q2. According to the carrier, its first quarter revenues were depressed by overcapacities, especially on short and medium haul European routes, but booking levels were more favorable for Q2 months.

So, although year-to-date volumes are still weak compared to the same period the year prior, likely due in part to the continued Brexit issue and global economic uncertainty, the return in growth of carriers’ volumes this month could indicate better potential for the year to come.

Based on figures from Armstrong & Associates, the leading 25 airfreight forwarders recorded a 4.2% increase in volumes to 16.7m tonnes last year.

In most years this would be considered a very good performance, but the result follows on from a strong increase of 11.1% in 2017.

Last year started strongly with growth of around 5% in the first quarter before dropping off to around 1% in the final quarter of the year.

DHL Global Forwarding managed to maintain its position as the world’s largest airfreight forwarder despite its main rivals continuing to close the gap.

The Germany-based company registered a year-on-year decline of 4.4% in airfreight volumes to 2.1m tonnes, which was the biggest drop of any forwarder on the list.

Its closest rival, Kuehne+Nagel, was up by 11% to 1.7m tonnes and there was a 0.3% increase at number three placed DB Schenker to 1.3m tonnes.

The number four air forwarder, Panalpina, was up 4.3% to over 1m airfreight tonnes for the first time in its history.
