Emirates Airlines has announced a deal with Airbus to buy another 36 A380 superjumbos, just days after the European aerospace giant said it may have to halt production of the double-decker plane without new orders.
Emirates Airlines said Thursday it had struck a deal with Airbus worth $16 billion (€13 billion), including firm orders for 20 of the double-decker aircraft with options for a further 16 planes. Deliveries were scheduled to start in 2020, the Dubai-based carrier said in a statement.
Emirates is already the world’s biggest customer for the Airbus A380, with 101 of these planes already in its fleet and 41 more firm orders previously placed.
“This order will provide stability to the A380 production line,” the airline’s chairman and CEO, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, said in a statement, adding: “Our customers love it, and we’ve been able to deploy it on different missions across our network, giving us flexibility in terms of range and passenger mix.”
Airbus sales chief John Leahy said the new order would underscore the plane maker’s commitment to continue producing the A380 “at least for another 10 years.”
Still on Monday, the superjumbo program of the European aerospace company had appeared to be in jeopardy after Leahy publicly questioned the future of the A380, saying production risked being shut down if the Emirates deal fell through.
Speaking to reporters, Leahy said that the Middle Eastern airline was “the only one with the ability” to purchase enough aircraft to keep the program afloat.

Airbus produced 15 A380s in 2017; it will hand over 12 this year and just eight in 2019. The company needs a minimum number of six deliveries a year for a period of at least eight to 10 years to keep the A380 alive. That will give the company scope to sell two or three additional superjumbos, helping it to carve out a profit on the program.
The A380 program has been struggling due to a lack of interest by major airlines worried about the cost of operating such a large aircraft. The four-engine plane, introduced in 2005, is so big that some airports had to expand runway facilities in order to accommodate the 550-seat aircraft.
Moreover, purchasing trends have skewed towards smaller, more fuel efficient models like the Boeing 787 or Airbus A350.
More business from Emirates is key to attracting other buyers of the A380 and ensuring jets sold now would hold their resale value. With a list price of $446 million, the plane is one of the most expensive and least flexible for airlines to deploy in their fleets.

The new Beluga XL, the aircraft transportation carrier of Airbus, has made its first run near the Airbus hangars at Toulouse-Blagnac airport.
The moment seized by a photographer, Rhami Khanna, who posted his photos on his Flickr account and quickly spread through social media.
Until now we had only seen the computer graphics provided by Airbus when the manufacturer launched the program. The first flight of the Beluga XL will take place in 2018. The commissioning of the Beluga XL is scheduled for 2019.

Friday, December 22, 2017, Ukraine International Airlines enhanced its fleet with a brand new Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft manufactured at Boeing facilities in Seattle. Therefore, the leading Ukraine’s carrier has successfully completed its 2017 fleet renewal and expansion program.
The aircraft passed an official registration procedure in Ukraine and received the UR-UIA registration number. The aircraft accommodates 186 passengers in two-class seating configuration. UIA expects to operate the new Boeing 737-800 NG across its medium-haul route network. Thursday, December 28, the UR-UIA is scheduled to operate the first flight under PS code between Kiev and Amsterdam.
“Looking back on the year, I may safely say that we have successfully met all fleet development objectives – noted Yevgen Churyumov, Head of UIA Fleet Projects. – In 2017, we received five Boeing 737 NGs, including two brand new aircraft right off the production line, and substantially increased our capacity. Simultaneously, by decommissioning three Boeing 737 Classic aircraft we managed to further renew our fleet. The aircraft that arrived today is special because of its registration number chosen to mark the UIA 25th anniversary. In Q1 2018, we expect to receive yet another Boeing 737-800 aircraft, UR-PSZ. Therefore, we will collect the whole PS series alphabet from A to Z. As soon as we get the UR-PSZ, we will continue the UR-UIx registration series commenced with our shiny new UR-UIA aircraft.”
UIA keeps reducing the aircraft average age. Back in 2016, UIA enhanced fleet with Boeing aircraft with the average age of 10 years, while in 2017 the figure has been leveled off to 6 years.
Ukraine International operates 43 aircraft including 26 medium haul Boeing 737 NG aircraft with the average age of 8.7 years. Currently, UIA fleet’s average age amounts to 10.9 years.

SHANGHAI – China started trial operations of the world’s biggest automated container terminal, the Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port, in eastern China, on Sunday (Dec 10), Chinese official media reported.
Located at the south of Donghai Bridge, phase 4 of the Yangshan Port covers 2.23 million sq m and has a 2,350-m shoreline, the Xinhua news agency said.
Once it enters full operation, the fourth phase of the Yangshan Port will initially be able to handle 4 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The number will expand to 6.3 million TEUs later on.
“The automated terminal not only increases the port’s handling efficiency, but also reduces carbon emissions by up to 10 per cent,” said Chen Wuyuan, president of Shanghai International Port Group.
The automated handling equipment used in the project are designed and manufactured in China. Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company is responsible for making the machinery used in loading and unloading, including a bridge crane, an automated guided vehicle (AGV) and a rail-mounted gantry crane.
The port also used a domestically developed automated management system to ensure safety and efficiency.
The terminal will help boost Shanghai port’s standing as the busiest container port in the world. It will also further support Shanghai’s efforts to become a world shipping centre.
So far, the first set of machinery, including 10 bridge cranes, 40 rail-mounted gantry cranes and 50 AGVs, have been tested and put into trial operations. In future, there will be 26 bridge cranes, 120 rail-mounted gantry cranes and 130 AGVs available at the Yangshan automated container port.
