Freightos has launched a new online pricing and booking portal for airfreight as the digitisation of the sector continues to gather pace.
The free WebCargo Sky platform is available to IATA certified airfreight forwarders and as well as offering instant pricing from more than 370 airlines, will allow forwarders to book “real-time capacity”.
“Air cargo connectivity is at a tipping point and WebCargo Sky makes it accessible to any forwarder. As the industry’s most comprehensive e-Booking platform, Sky automates pricing from hundreds of airlines, even those without automated pricing”, – said WebCargo CEO Manel Galindo.
Zvi Schreiber, CEO of the Freightos Group, added: “By providing WebCargo Sky for free to air forwarders, there are zero barriers for forwarders and airlines to communicate online through WebCargo. This will provide better service to air shippers, including capacity visibility on specific flights”.
The company said that beta users report saving over one hour per salesperson per day, “reducing costs and enabling sales teams to focus on customer service”.
“Meanwhile, airlines benefit from accessing the world’s largest online network of forwarders as a sales channel and reduce 85% of time spent managing sales,” it added.
“Ultimately shippers will benefit most with air cargo becoming more affordable and predictable.”
The overall WebCargo rate portal was launched in 2008 and claims to have more than 1,400 logistics providers signed up.
The WebCargo platform is not the only portal targeting the airfreight forwarding community – cargo.one has also be signing up airlines and forwarders to its system.

Munich hosted the largest logistics fair in the world with new record values from June 4 to 7, 2019. The top topics were the trade war between the USA and China and the shortage of drivers, but the New Silk Road was clearly noticeable at the same time and great hopes were pinned on artificial intelligence in many areas.
“Transport logistic has confirmed its role as the world’s largest intermodal logistics hub. There were 2,374 exhibitors, an increase of 10 percent, and around 64,000 visitors, an increase of 5 percent,” Stefan Rummel, Managing Director of Messe München, reported. The trade fair has grown by one hall to ten halls and has once again become significantly more international, an increase of 3 percent points to 56 percent for exhibitors and also by 3 percent points to 47 percent for visitors.

“We saw strong growth from China, where the number of exhibitors almost doubled by 30 new ones to 64,” Mr. Rummel stated. “Chinese companies are increasingly looking for cooperation partners in Europe.” The driver shortage was also one of the dominant topics. In addition to more attractive working conditions, artificial intelligence could help in the long term; this should make logistics chains more transparent and efficient overall.
Major logistical problems
The major challenges facing the industry were discussed at the opening of a high-profile round panel discussion. “We need to make the growing traffic flows more efficient and affordable as well as environmentally and climate-friendly,” Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer stated. In reference to the global economy, DHL head Dr. Frank Appel expressed restrained optimism, “even though current relations between governments in the US and China are not conducive at the moment.” But: “Goods find their way despite customs disputes.”

The situation is currently also challenging for air freight, “which is a very volatile business. We have to be open to options and think in the long term,” Dorothea von Boxberg stated, Managing Director Product and Sales at Lufthansa Cargo AG. Alexander Doll, Director of Finance, Freight Transport and Logistics at Deutsche Bahn AG, distinguished between global and intra-regional trade flows: “We still see decent growth in the latter.”
The trade fair in figures
At transport logistic 2019, 2,374 exhibitors from 63 countries were present, an increase of 10 percent (2017: 2,162).
Around 64,000 visitors from 125 countries attended, an increase of 5 percent (2017: 60,726).
Around 30.000 visitors came from abroad.
The exhibition covered ten halls and an outdoor area, totaling 125,000 square meters of exhibition space.

DHL returned as an exhibitor.
The top ten exhibitor countries after Germany were: Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, France, Poland, China, Austria, Spain, United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic.
New exhibitors included Fercam, Neutral Air Cargo, Hong Kong COSCO Shipping Lines, China Asia Shipping and Yuxinou Logistics.
There will be twenty-five international joint pavilions, including Sri Lanka, Romania, Lithuania, Poland and Turkey.

Jettainer is equipping containers and pallets of American Airlines Cargo with the COREInsight tracking solution based on Bluetooth technology.
At the same time, the airline is extending its cooperation with Jettainer for another five years. This was announced by both companies on 4 June 2019 at the transport logistic / air cargo Europe trade fair in Munich.
Lufthansa Cargo-owned subsidiary Jettainer partnered with CORE Transport Technologies company in October last year to develop containers and pallets enabled with Bluetooth tracking. COREInsight, Core Transport’s tracking solution, allows for live tracking of the ULDs and their contents by purchase order and recording data, including temperature, GPS location, direction and speed of travel, and external and internal temperature.

American Airlines entire ULD fleet currently comprises more than 18,000 units. Jettainer and American Airlines are in the midst of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) proof of concept test and will equip 2,000 of these ULDs with Core-TT BLE tags. With this test American Airlines will be able to identify the benefits of having BLE tagged ULDs.
“ULD management is becoming increasingly digital and customers expect us to provide know-how and resources that fit their digital strategy. BLE technology for ULDs helps to significantly increase process efficiency and facilitates the integration of ground handling into a digital logistics chain. With our partner COREInsight for BLE tracking and our self-developed ULD black box for damage control, we are leading the way in digitization in the ULD business,” says Carsten Hernig, Managing Director of Jettainer GmbH.

“We strongly focus on opportunities created by digitalization in many areas. Jettainer’s BLE equipped ULDs are an important part of this overall strategy and we are glad to have such a strong partner on our side,” says Rick Elieson, President of American Airlines Cargo.
AA Cargo also signed on to Jettainer’s “Cool Management” service last October. The service includes temperature-controlled ULD leasing, management and monitoring during transportation. Jettainer monitors its «Cool Management» program from its Abu Dhabi “Cool Center of Excellence” operation.
